Play31 was founded in 2008 by Jakob Silas Lund, who was studying human rights at Columbia University in New York. Among the first supporters were UN Ambassadors Christian Wenaweser of Liechtenstein and Heraldo Munoz of Chile, Advocacy Director of the children’s rights division at Human Rights Watch Jo Becker, and the bestselling Sierra Leonean author and former child soldier, Ishmael Beah.
The name Play31 comes from the 31st article of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which states that all children have the right to play.
To bring people together by the means of sport across cultural, religious, and political differences in order to promote reconciliation and mutual understanding.
